DEAD WATER by Berrick Ford

In the 9th installment of the contemporary Detective Emilia Cruz police series set in Acapulco, the sister of the city’s mayor is found dead in an abandoned building. Emilia’s prime suspect is the dead woman’s abusive boyfriend whose alibi for the night in questions is flimsy at best.

Yet before Emilia can make an arrest, a high-ranking federal law enforcement officer is killed. Emilia knew him well, having worked with him during an operation targeting a major drug smuggling network that used the same abandoned building.

Emilia is sent to Washington D.C. to inform his wife in person and quickly realizes that the errand of mercy is an elaborate trap. She becomes a target for killers disguised as cops who are connected to the Department of State.

Barely staying one step ahead, without phone, money, car, friends, or place to hide, Emilia is desperate enough to turn to a man she once vowed to kill.

Her brother.

“A thrilling series.” – National Public Radio.

With a relentless pace and plots mirroring the drug war waged on both sides of the US-Mexico border, the Detective Emilia Cruz series is a back-to-back winner of the Poison Cup Award for Outstanding Series from CrimeMasters of America.
